Looking for a way to have beer for breakfast? Make these 100% whole wheat porter waffles with porter by Clifford Brewing! Delicious! If you use whole wheat flour you can even fool yourself into believing they’re good for you!
Here’s an interesting little tidbit about porter. The beer was originally made with brown malt. In the 1770’s it became more cost-effective to use mostly pale malt instead. When consumers saw this paler beer, they were suspicious that it was watered down. So some producers added things like opium, hemp, and even juice of a berry used to stun fish for easy netting to convince people it was just as strong as it always was.
Nothing like that went into these waffles though.
Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups (500ml) whole wheat flour (or you could substitute all-purpose flour)
- 1/2 cup (125 ml) vegetable oil, or melted butter
- 3/4 cup milk (180 ml)
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) brown sugar (or you could substitute granulated sugar)
- 2 teaspoons (10 ml) baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup Clifford Porter (236 ml)
Directions
- Heat waffle maker.
- Beat eggs with a wire whisk or hand beater in a medium bowl until fluffy
- Beat in remaining ingredients just until smooth
- Follow your waffle maker instruction in terms of how much batter to pour in. I have a small waffle maker that makes two at a time, so I pour about 2/3 of a cup of batter into the center of hot waffle maker, and I bake for about 5 minutes.
- Garnish with strawberries and raspberries
All porters are not created equal when it comes to pancakes and waffles. But we love beer with waffles so much we made it again with some seasonal beer we had after the season was over. Check out our Twice Checked Porter waffles, too.
About the Beer
The Clifford Porter pours a deep opaque brown with a generous, long-lasting head. Chocolaty roasted malt and mocha aromas are underscored by earthy/floral hops notes. Robust and full-bodied – toasty and nutty flavors lead to a lengthy finish.
